Luis Azevedo Receives USASA "Coach of the Year Region IV" Award

Luis Azevedo, Coaching Director from Santa Clara Sporting was awarded the Coach of the Year Region IV Award by the US Adult Soccer Association (USASA) on October 10th in Pheonix, Arizona.


Every year, USASA chooses one coach and referee per region. The finalists are honored at an Awards Luncheon during the Midyear Meeting but only one coach and one referee gets to receive the annual award.

Luis is the Coach for Santa Clara Sporting Club, where he also is a proud Sports Director. Through his passion, he hopes to reach his goal to give back to the community. The Santa Clara Sporting Club has contributed to many in-need public institutions. Luis proudly worked along side with the other directors, coaches, and players. Santa Clara Sporting Club has grown to sponsor about 25
youth soccer teams of girls and boys and 2 men’s teams.
Prior to his current position, Luis played for Santa Clara High School, West Valley College, and Portuguese Athletic Club (PAC) from San Jose, CA. While attending high school he also played Under-19 for PAC as well as for their men’s team. Then, Luis moved to play for Santa Clara Sporting Club in 1980 and took over as manager of the club in 1987.
Mr. Azevedo is known locally and nationally at the competitive men’s amateur soccer level and was always determined to maintain the professionalism and expectations within the soccer leagues. Under Luis’s leadership the SCS has won three league titles (1987, 1988 & 1989); three CPSA Championships (1994, 1997 & 2006); six CSA-N State Cup titles (1988, 1989, 1996, 1999, 2000 &
2001); and two overall State Cup Champions (1988 & 1989). But the most prestigious accomplishments have come in the United States Adult Soccer Association Amateur Cup. Since 1988, the Santa Clara Sporting have won the Northern California Cup 13 times and have been the Region IV Finalists 13 times and have won the USASA National Amateur Cup five of those times that they represented CSA-N and Region IV in the National Cup Finals.
Luis is a lifetime member of Santa Clara Sporting Club. He is proud to represent a club that promises educated youth teams. His biggest reward is all the players that inspired him to continue coaching, including his nephews, the friends he made along the way and all of the Santa Clara Sporting Club family. It is Luis philosophy that “Watching a young player develop and grow is the true measurement of success.”
Luis currently lives in Santa Clara, CA, with his wife, Tania, and two daughters, Natasha 15 and Briana 11. Natasha played on SCS Under-15 team.
