The Santa Clara Sporting 94 Team won the 2010 US Club Soccer National Cup IX Regional Tournament on June 15th, with a 2-0 victory over the Mustang Celtics Team in Turlock. Both teams came-out hard at the start, and as the match progressed Sporting seemed to have more scoring opportunities, but the Celtics were just as dangerous with their scoring chances. Neither team could score during regulation play, and the game went into two ten minute overtime periods. In the first overtime period, Sporting scored on an incredible free kick from 40 yards out when Jason Romero shot a searing ball into the far left upper corner of the Mustang goal. During the second overtime period, Bruno Andres got his foot on a corner kick and volleyed Santa Clara’s second goal into the Celtic net to seal the championship game. The Sporting 94 Team survived a rocky tournament with two early victories against the UC Alliance Corsarios 6-1, and the Manteca FC Boca Team 5-3, then lost their 3rd bracket game 4-5 to the Athletico Santa Rosa Team. Santa Clara won the tournament’s wild card spot, and had to replay Athletico Santa Rosa in the semifinals; and won the game 2-1 in 90+ degree heat in Turlock. They won the championship match 2-0 over the Mustang Celtics. Sporting finished the tournament with 4 wins and 1 loss, and scored 19 goals; letting-in 10 goals into their net. The championship victory gives the team a berth to compete in the US Club Soccer National Cup IX Championship held in Virgina Beach at the end of July, but the team will compete at the Surf Cup Tournament instead. Congratulations to all the players, coaches and parents.
