The Santa Clara Sporting 94 Boys finished the U17 CYSA State Cup run as Finalists after loosing a tough battle 0-1 against the PAC Tigres team today in Elk Grove, but they also qualified for the Far West Regional Tournament in Pheonix, Arizona held June 18th-24th when they received a wildcard berth. The team had a delayed start to their State Cup run due to the late winter storms that hit Northern California.
The team played their first game on March 31st against the Alum Rock Toritos and drew a 0-0 score while playing in the rain on a muddy field at Cherry Island. The clouds cleared on the next day and the team crushed the Oakdale United Team 6-0 and beat PAC Brasil 2-0. They had a very tough Quarterfinal game against the Central Valley SJFC Dynamo 94 Red Team and won 2-1 in the 94th minute of overtime. Santa Clara ran over the Mission SF Gims 8-0 in the Semi-final match last Sunday in Cherry Island. And today they played a tough game against the PAC Tigres but came-up short. Sporting had some dangerous scoring chances but could not put the ball in the back of the Tigres net, and their cross-town rivals scored the lone goal on a quick counter-attack.
The team will next play at the SJFC College Showcase on May 12th-13th in Morgan Hill, then the Placer Tournament over Memorial Weekend. In June they will compete at the Far West Regionals, then head to Surf Cup in July.
