The Santa Clara Sporting 97B green team has had a very successful September in two prestigious tournaments. Over Labor Day weekend, they traveled to Huntington Beach for the NHB Cup. In group play, they defeated Sereno from Arizona 2-1 scoring the winning goal in the final seconds, tied Chelsea 0-0, and defeated Nomads Fonbon 3-1 in a game they needed to win to advance. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Fullerton Rangers 1-0, then defeated Cal Odyssey Red 1-0 in the semis by bending in a corner kick . Finally, the 97B team defeated Cal Odyssey Blue 1-0 in the finals with the winning goal coming in the 2nd overtime period. With all the elimination games going 1-0, it made for an exhausting weekend.
Over the weekend of 9/24-25, Sporting 97B played in the prestigious Champions Cup in Manteca. The tournament featured many of the top teams in Northern California. In group play, they tied AR Zorros 2-2, defeated San Juan Lightning 2-0, then defeated the host Stockton Monarcas Aztec Warriors (the #2 ranked team in Norcal) 1-0 in a game they needed to win to advance. In the semis, they defeated the Stockton Storm (the #1 ranked team in Norcal) 2-1. In the finals, they had a rematch with the Aztec Warriors and fell 1-3. This was the 3rd game of the day for the team with only 14 players against an opponent with 19 players on the roster. It really showed in the 2nd half of the game. The team showed tremendous heart and desire with many players playing multiple positions to cover for their injured and fatigued teammates. All of the hard work in practice is finally starting to pay off.
