Sporting '98 Black Win Clovis Challenge Cup in PK Shootout

Congratulations to the Santa Clara Sporting ’98 Boys Black Team for winning the 2010 Cal-Odyssey Clovis Challenge Cup on October 23rd-24th.  The Sporting ’98s had to battle through two intense games, and showed a "never give-up" commitment and determination to bring home the championship cup.

In their first bracket game, the team lost a close 0-2 game against the Cal-Odyssey South Team, and then the boys rebounded and handed-out a 4-0 defeat over the COSC U12 BW Team.  A tie or a win in their third bracket game would send the Santa Clara Team into the Finals, and the team was tested against the Cal-Odyssey U12 Red Team.  Cal-Odyssey got on the scoreboard and was able to hold a 1-0 lead throughout the intense match, but Sporting continued to pressure the Red Team trying to find the equalizer goal. With less than a minute to go on the clock, Sporting scored a goal to tie the game right before the referee blew his whistle to end the game.  That goal would send the team to the championship match!

The U12 Boys Championship game was a rematch of Santa Clara’s first bracket game against the Cal-Odyssey South Team, when the host team came-out the winners over Sporting.  In another intensely fought soccer game, both teams demonstrated their potent offense skills.  Sporting scored first and led the game 1-0, but Cal-Odyssey responded and tied the match 1-1.  Then Cal-Odyssey scored a second goal to take the lead 2-1 over Santa Clara, but Sporting tied the game 2-2. Then Cal-Odyssey recaptured the lead on their third goal to lead the game 3-2 with only three minutes left in the match. With only one minute left in the game, Santa Clara earned a corner kick...the ball sailed into the goal box and bounced-off the back of a Cal-Odyssey player, and a Sporting player headed the ball into the back of the net! GOOOALLL! and the game is tied 3-3 when the whistle blows. The game is sent into overtime, and after two 5-minute overtime periods the score remains 3-3, and now the championship match goes into a penalty kick shoot-out. Sporting scored all four of their PKs while Cal-Odyssey missed two shots. Sporting won 4-2 in the PK shootout! Congratulations to all the players, coaches and parents!
