The Santa Clara Sporting 99 Girls Green Team finished their 2014 season with a phenominal run in San Diego and won the U15 Surf Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend. The Sporting girls won their first game 1-0 over FRAM Aguinaldo from Southern California then dropped a well-fought game 1-2 against the SC Del Sol 2000 Girls ECNL Team from Arizona.
Santa Clara only traveled with 14 players to San Diego because their roster was battered after going undefeated in the highly competitive CRL league back in Northern California. But soon after they started the weekend they lost two more players to injury and were now fighing tooth and nail with only 12 healthy players. Showing some real grit they dug-in and continued to battle one half at a time; one game at a time, and defeated West Coast FC United White 2-1 to win their final bracket game, then beat their local NorCal rivals the Central Valley Crossfire with a 2-0 score in their quarterfinal game. The Semi-final was another all NorCal match agsinst the Davis Legacy '00 Red Team whom they already played twice in league during the Fall season. Santa Clara won that game 1-0 in a difficult physical game with only one substituion on the bench.
"I didn't think the girls had any energy left after we fought through the Semis, but they were extremely motivated and showed a lot of charcter in the Championship match," said Coach Demitri Cacoyannis. Sporting won the game 2-0 over the LA Galaxy SB Elite Team in the championship match. The LA Galaxy are ranked #1 in SoCal, #1 in Region IV and #3 in the US, so Santa Clara truley showed they can play with heart when they had their backs against the wall with just 12 players facing an onslaught of the best SoCal and NorCal teams.
Congrats to the players and coaches.
