Santa Clara City Council Awards Brian Field & 5 Santa Clara Sporting Champions

May 10, 2016 - Tuesday night was a joyous celebration at the Santa Clara City Council when Mayor Lisa Gilmor and the six Santa Clara Council Members recognized Brian Field and five Santa Clara Sporting Teams for their soccer accomplishments. Mayor Gilmor awarded proclaimations to Field and the five Sporting Teams that won the 2015-16 Cal-North State Cup Championship last month.

First up was Santa Clara native Brian Field, who won the 2016 CCS Soccer Player of the Year Award while competing on The Kings Academy High School Team last winter. Brian plays forward on the Varsity Team and scored a whopping 58 goals during the high school season to lead his team deep into CCS Playoffs. The CCS Award typically goes to a high school senior, and so Brian's accomplishment as a junior is just about as amazing as watching Steph Curry play basketball. Brian also plays club soccer on the Santa Clara Sporting 98 Boys Green Team.

The Santa Clara Sporting 03 Boys Green Team won their first Cal-North State Cup Championship in the Under-12 boys age group. They defeated the San Jose Earthquakes Pre-Academy Team to win the finals. The boys are ranked #1 in the US by GotSoccer.

Santa Clara Sporting 00 Boys Green Team won their second Cal-North State Cup Championship last month and also won the 2015 National Premier League Championship out in Indiana.

The Santa Clara Sporting 99 Girls Green Team are three-peat Cal-North State Cup Champions. The girls won 5 State Cup titles during the past 3 years (3 Cal-North and 2 NorCal Premier titles). They are certainly a favorite team that could potentially win the Far West Regional Tournament next month and earn a spot in the National Championship tournament.

The Santa Clara Sporting 98 Girls Green Team won their first Cal-North State Cup Championship in the Under-17 age group. They beat local rivals Lamorinda United in a thrilling 2-1 victory in overtime. Lamorinda is the 3-time State Champion, so it was an incredible accomplishment for Santa Clara to topple the United Team in a well fought battle.

The Santa Clara Sporting 98 Boys Green Team won their third Cal-North State Cup Championship last month. The boy have won the last three of their four appearances at the State Cup Final and still have one more season to go for a fourth title.

All the State Cup Champions earned a berth to compete in the Far West Regional Tournament held the end of June in Boise, Idaho. The winners of that tournament earn a spot to compete in the US National Championship. Good luck to our teams!
