Sporting 00B White Win Presidents Cup & Qualify to Compete in Regionals

March 22, 2014

The Santa Clara Sporting 00B White Team won the 2013-14 Cal-North Presidents Cup U13 boys division and qualify to compete in the Regional Tournament this June.

The team played some great soccer in group play winning their first game 2-1 against the South San Jose United Team. They won two more games on Sunday; a 3-2 victory over the MCL Briceno Soccer Navy Team, then dominated the Santa Cruz SC Sharks 00 Blue Team with a big 3-0 shutout. Sporting built momentum with the three bracket game victories and earned a spot in a semi-final match against the Capital Valley CVU Blackhawks 01 Red Team.  Santa Clara came-out strong and ended-up defeating Capital Valley CVU with a whopping 5-1 score.

The championship game was a rematch against the Santa Cruz SC Sharks 00 Blue team that Sporting beat 3-0 earlier in bracket play. Santa Cruz decided to bunker down their defense and made it very hard for Santa Clara to generate many scoring opportunities.  The championship was decided with just 20 seconds left in the game when Sporting finally put the ball in the back of Santa Cruz's net to win the title with a 1-0 score.

The Presidents Cup Championship title qualifies the 00B White Team to compete in the Regional Tournament hosted at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex this June. Sporting will face championship teams from Alaska, Nevada, and Oregon in their bracket play.  If Santa Clara can win the Regionals, they would earn a spot to compete in US National's held in July out in South Carolina.
