Sporting '97 Girls Green Win Ajax United Invitational

The Santa Clara Sporting ’97 Girls (U12) Green Team were looking to shake off some rust at the Modesto Ajax Winter Invitational after their three week break following the NorCal State Cup. The girls came out a little flat on Saturday morning and had to come back to win 2 -1 over the Cal Cougars. The girls still looked a little rusty in the first half against Modesto Ajax Premier, but they started looking like their old selves in the second half to score 5 unanswered goals for the 5-0 win. The girls then faced Modesto’s "A" team the Ajax Elite in the Semi-Finals. It was a tough physical game and the girls were down 0-1 early in the second half. But the Sporting Girls quickly rallied and put two goals of their own in the back of the net before half-time. The second half continued to be a physical battle and the Sporting girls found the net one more time to advance to the Finals with a 3-1 win. In the Championship match, they played a very determined and physical Sonoma County Alliance (SCA) Team. Midway through the first half Sporting scored the first goal of the game and went into half-time with a 1-0 lead. The intensity was high in the second half and SCA was pushing hard for an equalizer, but Sporting ’s back-line and midfield would not allow any shots on goal. With about one minute left in the game, Sporting put another ball in the back of the SCA net and cruised to a 2-0 win and took home the cup. Congratulations to the players, coaches and parents.
